Ethiopia Coffee Production to Rise in 2023-24

Ethiopia’s coffee production is forecast to rise by 1% in the marketing year beginning October 2023, the U.S. Agriculture Department said late Friday. Production is expected to increase to 8.35 million 60-kilogram bags from 8.27 million bags in the current year, the USDA said in its annual Ethiopia coffee report.

In the current marketing year, higher volume and quality coffee is expected due to favorable weather conditions and farmers being motivated by higher prices, as well as additional plantations which began in recent years coming into full production, it said.

In the current year, exports are forecast to fall to 4.82 million bags from 4.83 million bags in the prior year, mainly due to better prices in the local market compared with international prices, it said.

Exports are forecast at 4.83 million bags in 2023-24. Ethiopia, Africa’s largest coffee producer, and the world’s fifth-largest arabica-coffee exporter, consumes almost half of its output, which is high for a major producing country, according to the USDA.

It said Ethiopia Coffee Exchange has streamlined the coffee value chain so that coffee farmers with a minimum of two hectares, coffee unions, commercial farmers and coffee processors could export coffee directly to the international market without using intermediaries.
