On occasion of King Mohammed’s coronation anniversary, Morocco gains more support over Sahara

Support for Morocco’s autonomy plans for Western Sahara continue to soar as the international community continues to lend support. The latest is coming from Dominican Republic.

The country on the island of Hispaniola has reiterated its absolute recognition of the Moroccanness of the Western Sahara.

The revelation comes from the statement by Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs which stated that  the Dominican Republic has addressed a letter to the Moroccan government to affirm its position on the Sahara dossier.

Roberto Alvarez, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of External Relations, wrote the letter on behalf of the country’s President Luis Abinader, the statement from Morocco’s ministry added.

The Dominican Republic “reiterates its absolute recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara,” the letter read, stressing that the country is also considering the opening of a consulate in the city of Dakhla.

The Dominican Republic also joined a growing list of countries that reiterated support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan  as a serious and credible political solution to end the dispute over the southern regions.

Alvarez also informed Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that his country’s president expressed the wish to pay a state visit to Morocco, in order to further strengthen political, commercial, and cooperation ties between the two countries.

Meanwhile, King Mohammed VI who is also celebrating 24th anniversary of his accession to the Moroccan throne, is glad over the growing support Morocco has been gaining in the international community for the country’s territorial integrity.

In his Throne Day speech, King Mohammed VI recalled Israel’s decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, stressing that the support reflects Rabat’s seriousness and efforts in defending the country’s territorial integrity.

“It is that seriousness, coupled with the legitimacy of our cause, which led to a series of decisions to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces – the latest being that of the State of Israel – as well as to open consulates in Laayun and Dakhla, not to mention the growing support for the Autonomy Initiative,” King Mohammed VI said.
