Luis Rubiales has been enemy number one for most football fans across the world over the past week after his shenanigans at the Women’s World Cup final.
He is the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation and attended the final between Spain and England in that capacity.
After the final whistle, Rubiales held forward Jennifer Hermoso’s face and planted a kiss on her lips, about which she said in a live stream by one of the players, that she did not like that.
What ensued was a storm of public backlash against Rubiales, for whom a press conference was called by the Spanish FA a few days later, where he was expected to resign.
He took to the stage and instead of announcing his resignation, he did the opposite. He repeatedly stated that he would not resign.
It was then reported that the Spanish FA would sue Jenni Hermoso for ‘lying’ about the kiss being non-consensual.
Subsequently, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee suspended Rubiales for 90 days and now the Secretary General of the Spanish FA has asked UEFA to suspend the federation itself, which would mean expulsion of all Spanish teams from European tournaments.
What are Liverpool fans saying about it?
Should it really come to an expulsion of all Spanish teams from European tournaments, however unlikely that may be, Liverpool fans are excited by the thought of getting a wild card entry into the Champions League.
Ryan: “So if Spanish teams are actually kicked out then there surely has to be a plan for filling in this 4 slots. Really hope they would pull the 5th place teams from England, Germany, France, and Italy or whoever the other 4 in the top 5 are.”
