Newcastle United injury update: latest return dates ahead of international break

Newcastle United will head into the upcoming three-week international break with renewed confidence after responding to their heavy defeat at Leeds United by securing a 2-1 Premier League victory over Hull City.

The result lifted Mathias Jaissle’s team to ninth in the Premier League table, with the Magpies collecting eight points from their opening five matches.

Newcastle have endured significant change since the end of last season. Following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign, the club underwent a major squad overhaul, while Eddie Howe’s departure paved the way for Jaissle to take charge. The new head coach has quickly earned praise from supporters for his personality and approach.

Despite the changes, Newcastle have made a respectable start to the campaign and have also booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. With the international break now providing several players with time to recover, here is the latest injury situation at St James’ Park.

Dan Burn

Newcastle captain Dan Burn has yet to feature this season after suffering an ankle injury during training. The defender took over the captaincy from Bruno Guimaraes following his move to Arsenal, but his start to the campaign has been disrupted by the setback.

Burn is expected to return after the international break.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

Matias Fernandez-Pardo

Summer signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo was unavailable for the victory over Hull after Jaissle revealed that the striker is still working on his fitness.

The forward had a limited pre-season before completing his move to Newcastle, meaning he has yet to reach full match fitness. With the squad stretched during the international break, opportunities for him to feature in a behind-closed-doors game could also be limited.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

Tino Livramento

Tino Livramento has withdrawn from England duty because of an unspecified injury issue and is due to undergo an MRI scan to establish the severity of the problem.

The development is particularly frustrating for the full-back, who had only recently returned from another setback that previously disrupted his hopes of featuring at the 2026 World Cup.

Expected return: Unknown

Jacob Ramsey

Jacob Ramsey’s encouraging run of form has been interrupted by a thigh injury. The Newcastle midfielder scored an important goal in the 2-2 draw earlier this month before suffering the setback during the warm-up ahead of the defeat to Leeds.

The three-week international break should give Ramsey valuable time to complete his rehabilitation.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

Sean Steur

Young midfielder Sean Steur is also expected to return shortly after the international break.

His substitution in the 66th minute against Hull is understood to have been precautionary after he suffered from cramp. Steur is still working towards full match sharpness after a slow beginning to the campaign.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

Amar Dedic

Amar Dedic remains sidelined with a thigh injury but is also expected to make his return in the near future.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

Anthony Elanga

Anthony Elanga made an impressive start to life at Newcastle, scoring against both Liverpool and Tottenham, but his progress has since been halted by a hamstring injury.

The initial expectation was that the winger could be unavailable for around two months. However, Elanga is reportedly progressing well in his recovery, raising hopes that he could return earlier than originally anticipated.

Expected return: 25 October vs Crystal Palace

Nico Gonzalez

Nico Gonzalez missed the Hull City match after entering concussion protocols.

The Newcastle midfielder suffered the injury after taking a powerful shot to the face during the defeat to Leeds, forcing Jaissle to make a concussion substitution less than 20 minutes into the match.

He is expected to be available again next month.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

Ewen Jaouen

Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is also recovering from an ankle injury and is expected to return around the same time as Gonzalez.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

Joelinton

Brazil international Joelinton continues to recover from a thigh injury and remains unavailable for Newcastle.

The midfielder is expected to have sufficient time during the international break to work towards a return.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

William Osula

William Osula has also been sidelined, with the Danish forward dealing with a foot problem.

He has been unavailable since Newcastle’s dramatic opening-day draw against Liverpool but is expected to be back after the international break.

Expected return: 12 October vs Coventry City

With several players expected to return during or shortly after the international window, Newcastle will hope the break allows their injury list to shrink ahead of the next phase of the season.
