Harrison Armstrong sets remarkable Premier League running record for Everton
Harrison Armstrong has emerged as the Premier League’s leading distance runner after covering more ground than any other player during the opening five matches of the campaign.
The 19-year-old Everton midfielder has clocked up an impressive 60.4km so far, placing him at the top of the league standings. Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross is his closest rival, having covered 59.7km.
Armstrong has started all five of Everton’s Premier League fixtures under David Moyes and has played all but four minutes, quickly becoming an important part of the manager’s midfield plans.
Armstrong setting the pace
The youngster produced his biggest running performance during Everton’s 1-0 win over Ipswich Town at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Armstrong covered 12.9km during the match, the highest distance recorded by any player in a single Premier League fixture this season.
His total was also 1.1km more than any other player managed during that game.
Armstrong was equally impressive against Crystal Palace, covering 12.41km. That figure puts him among the highest individual distances recorded in the Premier League this season and further demonstrates the energy and work rate he has brought to Moyes’ midfield.
His rapid rise is particularly notable given his age. Armstrong became the first teenager since Ross Barkley in the 2013/14 season to start Everton’s first five Premier League matches of a campaign.
England recognition follows Everton breakthrough
Armstrong’s performances have also attracted attention at international level. He was initially called up to England’s Under-20 squad this week before being promoted to the Under-21s.
The Everton midfielder has since linked up with teammates Tyler Dibling and Tyrique George in Lee Carsley’s England Under-21 squad for the remainder of the international break.
Everton also drew attention to Armstrong’s extraordinary running statistics on Thursday, posting the simple phrase: “Every blade of grass.”
The description certainly appears appropriate. After five Premier League matches, no player has covered more ground than Armstrong, highlighting just how much energy the teenage midfielder has provided during Everton’s impressive start under Moyes.
