Lewis Hall has dealt Manchester United a major blow after signing a contract extension with Newcastle United, strengthening the club’s position and making a future move to Old Trafford increasingly difficult.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the decision to postpone their interest until next summer could now prove costly, with a deal for Hall looking increasingly unlikely.
Neither Newcastle nor Hall appeared to give United any indication that they were open to a transfer, raising questions over the confidence behind the club’s reported plan to return with an offer next summer.
As a result, Ruben Amorim’s side could be forced to look elsewhere for a new left-back in 2027, with Hall’s potential move to Manchester United now looking increasingly remote.
What was Manchester United’s plan for Lewis Hall?
Football Insider reported on September 5 that Manchester United intended to revive their interest in Hall next summer, with strengthening the left-back position remaining one of their key priorities.
United had previously registered their interest in the Newcastle defender but stopped short of making a formal approach. Instead, the club reportedly chose to wait until next year before attempting to pursue a deal.
However, Hall’s new contract has significantly changed the situation, with the defender now more firmly tied to Newcastle. The decision to delay the move has subsequently attracted criticism.
“It looks like Man United are going to miss out on Lewis Hall now,” Brown told Football Insider.
According to Brown, United’s intention was to revisit the possibility of signing Hall next summer, believing they could complete the deal at that stage. However, he questioned whether Newcastle or the player had ever indicated that such a transfer would be possible.
Brown added that United’s approach appeared too relaxed given the absence of any clear encouragement from either Newcastle or Hall that a deal was likely to happen.
If Manchester United return for Hall next summer, they could now face a significantly higher asking price, while there is also no guarantee that Newcastle will be willing to negotiate a transfer at all.
