Tottenham Hotspur are not expected to consider Mauricio Pochettino as a potential replacement for Roberto De Zerbi, even if the club eventually decides to dismiss the Italian manager.
Pochettino has recently spoken openly about his affection for Tottenham and his ambition to manage in the Premier League again at some point. Those comments have inevitably sparked speculation that he could make an emotional return to North London.
However, the Argentine has only recently signed a new contract with the United States national team and is not expected to walk away from the role anytime soon.
Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider that Pochettino is unlikely to return to Spurs in the near future, regardless of whether the managerial position becomes available.
The uncertainty surrounding De Zerbi’s future comes after a difficult start to his first full season in charge. Tottenham are still searching for their first Premier League victory and have failed to score in their opening four league matches. Their struggles continued in the Carabao Cup, where they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool and were knocked out of the competition.
Pochettino’s Tottenham return appears unlikely
Brown previously revealed in July that Pochettino was prepared to postpone his return to the Premier League after missing out on opportunities to take charge of both Tottenham and Manchester United.
With De Zerbi and Michael Carrick securing permanent managerial appointments, Pochettino’s chances of returning to English football became even more complicated while he remained committed to the United States ahead of the World Cup.
Although his latest comments have once again fuelled suggestions that he could eventually return to England, Brown believes Spurs are unlikely to pursue him if they decide to part company with De Zerbi.
“I don’t see any way Pochettino could return to Tottenham at the moment,” Brown told Football Insider.
“He has signed a new contract with the USA and appears to be doing a good job there. They were impressive at the World Cup, so I expect him to continue in the role.
“Every now and then, he gives an interview and talks about potentially returning to Tottenham, but either the timing isn’t right or there are other candidates ahead of him.
“It looks like that will be the situation again. Even if Tottenham decide to sack De Zerbi, they are going to have to look elsewhere.”
