Alexander Isak has insisted that he has no regrets about leaving Newcastle United to join Liverpool, despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his departure and the hostile reception he received on his return to St James’ Park.
The Sweden international was once one of the most adored players on Tyneside, but his decision to push for a move away from Newcastle dramatically changed the relationship between the striker and the club’s supporters.
When Isak returned to St James’ Park with Liverpool last month, Newcastle fans made their feelings unmistakably clear. The 26-year-old was confronted with a hostile reception from the moment Liverpool arrived in the city, with the atmosphere intensifying when the team bus reached the stadium.
Isak then endured a frustrating outing on the pitch, failing to make the most of his opportunities before missing a late penalty that would have given Liverpool a chance to equalise.
Despite the difficult return, Isak has now made it clear that he does not question his decision to leave Newcastle.
Asked by the BBC whether he had any doubts about joining Liverpool, Isak replied: “No, never. I would never think like that. Liverpool is a massive club and everything about the club made it pretty clear.
“The club’s ambition and the club’s will to get me in as well was a big part of it.”
Isak also reflected on the serious leg injury that disrupted his start at Liverpool. While admitting that the setback was difficult, he explained that his focus is firmly on the future rather than what happened during his time on the sidelines.
“It was tough. Anyone who had a long injury would know,” he said. “But on the other hand, when you’re in a good place and when you feel good, you don’t really tend to look back because it doesn’t really benefit you.
“So I’m just looking forward, feeling really optimistic, excited about the season and what it can bring to us.”
Isak focused on goals and trophies
The Liverpool forward also discussed Andoni Iraola’s attacking approach and explained how he believes the system can help the team create more chances and score more goals.
According to Isak, the focus should not simply be on getting the ball to him but on moving possession quickly towards Liverpool’s attacking players.
“I think that’s what the team needs. It’s not just about getting the ball to me, it’s about getting the ball forward and to all of the offensive players quickly,” he explained.
“That will benefit the team. I think if we can do that then we should score more goals.”
Isak also revealed that his ultimate ambition is to help Liverpool win trophies while contributing as many goals as possible.
“Everyone knows that success for this club is winning trophies. I want to score every game,” he added.
While some players prefer setting personal targets before a season, Isak admitted that he is not someone who likes putting a specific number on his goals.
“Everyone is different. Some like to set targets and some don’t. I’m the one who doesn’t.”
