Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto has been urged to end his rotating captaincy approach and appoint one permanent skipper after five different players have worn the armband across the club’s opening six matches of the season.
Wolves experienced a major squad rebuild during the summer following their relegation to the Championship. While the changes did not go as far as some supporters had hoped, adding experienced leaders was clearly one of the club’s priorities.
The arrivals of Raul Jimenez and Kieran Trippier were particularly welcomed by fans, with Trippier seemingly the natural candidate for the captaincy given his previous experience leading Newcastle during a successful spell.
However, Peixoto has previously made it clear that he does not want to rely on one permanent captain. Instead, the Portuguese coach has opted for a leadership group made up of around four or five senior players.
That decision has already resulted in five different Wolves players taking responsibility as captain since the EFL Cup clash with Port Vale. Trippier, Jimenez, Andre, Toti Gomes and Jose Sa have all worn the armband at different stages.
The unusual approach has now sparked debate among supporters, with Wolves fan pundit Thomas Woodhall arguing that Peixoto should eventually settle on one club captain.
“Yeah, I think you have to choose one captain,” Woodhall told FLW.
He acknowledged the value of having several leaders within the squad but insisted that Wolves still need one recognised figure to lead the team.
According to Woodhall, Trippier would be the obvious choice because of his experience, although he also raised the possibility of selecting someone younger who could remain at the club for several years.
Andre or Ladislav Krejci were suggested as potential alternatives, particularly if Wolves are looking for a captain capable of providing long-term stability.
The debate comes at an important stage for Peixoto, who must find the right balance within a squad that has undergone significant changes. While a leadership group can spread responsibility across the dressing room, Wolves will now have to decide whether maintaining the rotating captaincy system is the best way forward.
