Tottenham are facing increasing criticism after struggling to create clear-cut chances despite making significant investments in the squad during the summer transfer window.
Roberto De Zerbi has also come under scrutiny, with some questioning his management style and suggesting that tensions could already be developing at the club. The growing pressure has inevitably led to renewed discussion about Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino’s comments raise eyebrows
Pochettino recently revealed that Tottenham offered him a contract last season, but he was unable to accept the opportunity because of the timing ahead of the World Cup.
The former Spurs boss also appeared to leave the possibility of returning to north London open in the future.
However, former Tottenham senior scout Mick Brown believes Pochettino’s comments could have been carefully calculated to encourage supporters to call for his return while increasing the pressure on De Zerbi.
Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said Pochettino has never hidden his desire to potentially return to Tottenham and pointed out that his name regularly resurfaces whenever a Spurs manager comes under pressure.
Brown believes Pochettino’s successful spell at Tottenham means many supporters still have strong memories of his time in charge, which could make them more receptive to the idea of seeing him return.
He suggested that continued poor results under De Zerbi could increase frustration among supporters, potentially creating even greater pressure on the current manager and eventually forcing the club to make a decision over his future.
Brown also questioned what purpose Pochettino’s comments serve, arguing that talking about a possible return does little to help De Zerbi while he is trying to establish himself at Spurs.
De Zerbi’s position remains secure for now
Despite the recent criticism, there is currently no indication that Tottenham are considering dismissing De Zerbi.
The club have heavily backed the Italian’s plans, including bringing in several of the players he wanted during the summer transfer window. As a result, Spurs are expected to give him sufficient time to implement his footballing philosophy and develop the squad.
The scale of the changes made to the team also means patience is likely to be required as the players adapt to De Zerbi’s methods.
Reports suggest that De Zerbi remains confident that he has the backing of the Tottenham hierarchy and believes he can turn the club’s fortunes around.
For now, the Italian is expected to remain in charge as Tottenham attempt to find consistency and begin showing the results expected from their major summer investment.
