Tottenham stand by Roberto De Zerbi despite difficult start
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly decided against considering Roberto De Zerbi’s position despite the club’s disappointing opening to the new Premier League season.
De Zerbi took charge in the spring and helped Spurs avoid relegation, collecting 11 points from their final seven matches. The Italian was then heavily supported in the summer transfer market, with Tottenham spending more than £300 million on new players, including major deals for Sandro Tonali, Savio and Mateus Fernandes.
However, the significant investment has yet to produce the desired results. Tottenham have collected only two points from their first five league matches and did not score a Premier League goal until the 86th minute of their latest game, when they mounted a late comeback attempt in a 3-2 defeat against Aston Villa.
The poor run has left Spurs at the bottom of the Premier League table and one point from safety.
With an extended three-week international break now providing clubs with an opportunity to make managerial changes, there had been speculation that Tottenham could use the period to reconsider De Zerbi’s position.
According to TEAMtalk, however, that is not currently part of the club’s plans. The report states that Tottenham’s hierarchy remain fully behind De Zerbi and believe there is no better candidate to oversee a turnaround in the team’s fortunes.
The club’s hierarchy are also understood to share De Zerbi’s frustration with the performances so far, with the players reportedly carrying a significant portion of the responsibility for the disappointing results.
Why Tottenham are sticking with De Zerbi
With 10 new players arriving during the summer, De Zerbi can argue that the squad needs more time to develop an understanding of his tactical approach and build chemistry.
After only five league matches, Tottenham’s hierarchy appear unwilling to make a drastic decision, particularly given their desire to avoid another period of managerial instability.
However, patience may not last indefinitely. If Spurs fail to improve their performances and results during the next five league matches, the situation could look very different when the November international break arrives.
