Morgan Gibbs-White could receive contract bonus after England call-up
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is reportedly in line for a significant financial boost after earning a late England call-up.
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes the 26-year-old is highly likely to have an international appearance bonus included in his current contract, meaning his latest involvement with the Three Lions could trigger an additional payment.
Gibbs-White was added to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures after Chelsea forward Cole Palmer withdrew from the squad.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Wyness explained that clubs often include international appearance bonuses in players’ contracts because representing their country can increase their market value.
The former Wolves midfielder was surprisingly left out of England’s World Cup squad despite an outstanding Premier League campaign in which he scored 15 goals.
He now has another opportunity to impress Tuchel and establish himself more firmly in the England setup.
Gibbs-White has been eager for England opportunity
Wyness, who worked as Everton’s chief executive between 2004 and 2009 and now advises leading football clubs through his consultancy, believes Gibbs-White has been particularly keen to break into the England team.
The Forest star has previously spoken about his ambition to represent his country, with regular international football potentially representing the next major step in his development.
Wyness suggested that Gibbs-White’s latest call-up could have a direct impact on his earnings.
“When I’ve negotiated in the past, you’ll often put in a cap bonus because it will add to the valuation of the player,” Wyness said.
He added that clubs can benefit from having a player whose value increases through international recognition, while some contracts also contain provisions that increase a player’s wages when they reach international milestones.
“I expect Gibbs-White to have that sort of clause in there,” Wyness continued, pointing to the midfielder’s long-standing desire to establish himself with England.
Forest could offer Gibbs-White another new deal
Forest are also reportedly determined to keep hold of their influential midfielder despite continued interest from Tottenham ahead of the January transfer window.
Football Insider recently reported that Nottingham Forest are prepared to do everything possible to prevent Gibbs-White from leaving.
One possibility could even be another contract extension, despite the player signing a fresh three-year agreement as recently as 2025.
Forest regard Gibbs-White as a crucial part of their squad, particularly after his impressive performances last season, when he emerged as one of their most influential players.
With interest in the midfielder continuing, the club could face further pressure to secure his long-term future at the City Ground.
