Ross Wilson’s Newcastle position strengthened as behind-the-scenes tensions ease
Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson appears to have strengthened his position at St James’ Park after a period of uncertainty surrounding his future.
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes the internal “politics” at Newcastle have shifted in Wilson’s favour, with the club seemingly returning to a more settled environment behind the scenes.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Wyness suggested that Wilson now has the backing required to continue overseeing Newcastle’s football operations, particularly as the club prepares to reshape its recruitment structure following Andy Howe’s departure from the scouting department.
Wilson’s position had reportedly come under pressure earlier in the summer. Football Insider reported in August that the sporting director was fighting to retain his role following what was viewed as a difficult transfer window for the Magpies.
However, his situation appears to have changed significantly in recent weeks.
Newcastle’s positive start under head coach Matthias Jaissle is believed to have contributed to a calmer atmosphere at the club, with Wyness describing the situation as a “happy house” on Tyneside.
The former Everton executive, who now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, believes an understanding may have been reached regarding Wilson’s future.
The fact that Newcastle are reportedly prepared to place Wilson in charge of rebuilding their recruitment department suggests the club remain confident in his plans.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained why he believes Wilson’s influence has grown.
“Probably one of the most dangerous things inside a football club is politics. But it does seem that he has got the support to go on,” Wyness said.
He pointed to Jaissle’s encouraging beginning as another factor that may have helped settle matters at the club.
“The manager seems to have started off well. Things are reasonably rosy in terms of their good start, and it does seem that therefore there’s a happy house.
“Ross Wilson is going to take advantage of that, and they obviously believe that his plans going forward are the right ones.
“If he was a big hand in getting this manager, then he will have reaped that reward as well. But yes, look, he’s consolidated his power, certainly.
“So it does seem as though there’s a bit of politics at play there. It seems there has been a behind-the-scenes settlement on the football side at Newcastle, and I’d expect Ross to be able to now operate in that environment.
“But he’s now got to make sure the right decisions go forward.”
With Newcastle preparing for another important phase of their recruitment strategy, Wilson will now face pressure to ensure the club’s plans off the pitch match the progress being made on it.
