Unai Emery sends honest message after Aston Villa’s frustrating 2-2 draw against Brentford
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery admitted he was disappointed with his side’s performance after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Brentford at Villa Park.
Villa had hoped to secure their first home victory of the Premier League season, but defensive weaknesses once again proved costly as both teams shared the points in an entertaining encounter.
Brentford took the lead in the 10th minute through Yehor Yarmoliuk, but Villa responded almost immediately when Nicolas Jackson found the net less than 90 seconds later, scoring for the second consecutive game.
The hosts moved ahead after the break when John McGinn scored, raising hopes that Emery’s side would finally claim all three points in front of their supporters.
However, Brentford demonstrated their own resilience as Kristoffer Ajer equalised, registering his first Premier League goal since March 2024 and ensuring the visitors left Birmingham with a point.
Although Villa recorded their first home point of the campaign, Emery made it clear that the result fell short of his expectations.
The Spanish manager admitted that drawing at home was not good enough and revealed that he was unhappy with the outcome. He had anticipated a difficult contest against Brentford but wanted his team to enjoy greater control of possession and dictate the tempo more effectively.
Emery also insisted that Villa created enough opportunities to score more than twice, although he acknowledged that their opponents carried a significant attacking threat throughout the match.
Despite his frustration, the Villa boss believes his team are showing signs of improvement compared with their previous home performances against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal. Nevertheless, he conceded that his side continue to concede more chances and goals than he would like.
Villa’s defensive struggles have become a major concern this season. The departure of England international Ezri Konsa to Arsenal during the summer represented a significant setback, and Emery’s team have managed just one clean sheet in the Premier League campaign while conceding 11 goals.
Emery acknowledged that his players would need time to adapt to his methods, particularly those who have recently joined the squad or are still adjusting to their roles.
However, he stressed that the process of improvement must happen quickly. The manager believes every match should provide an opportunity for his players to develop their understanding, strengthen their defensive organisation and improve their overall performances.
Despite the disappointing result, Emery remains optimistic about Villa’s progress and is determined to see his side become more consistent as the season continues.
Meanwhile, Brentford manager Keith Andrews offered his own perspective on the encounter, expressing disappointment that his team failed to take advantage of their late attacking pressure to secure a victory.
Andrews also commented on Villa Park’s unusual appearance, with the North Stand currently empty as redevelopment work continues.
The Brentford boss admitted that playing in a stadium with an entire stand missing felt strange, having experienced similar situations during his playing career. He explained that the absence of supporters in that section naturally affected the atmosphere, although he still considers Villa Park a special venue.
Reflecting on the match, Andrews acknowledged that either side could have won, but he felt Brentford had opportunities to make the most of their stronger spell during the final 10 to 15 minutes.
Nevertheless, he suggested that his disappointment at failing to beat a club competing in the Champions League demonstrated the progress and ambition within his Brentford squad.
For Villa, however, the immediate focus will be on addressing their defensive problems and turning encouraging performances into victories. Emery’s side have shown they can create chances and respond to setbacks, but until they become more reliable at the back, securing consistent results could remain a challenge.
