Alan Shearer Backs Newcastle’s Start Under Matthias Jaissle and Calls for Patience
Alan Shearer believes Newcastle United have made a positive start under Matthias Jaissle, while urging supporters to remain patient with the club’s young squad and suggesting that further additions could still be required.
Newcastle bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Leeds United by securing a 2-1 victory over Hull City on Saturday. Shearer was particularly impressed by the way the team responded to the setback, highlighting their strong opening period and determination to hold on to all three points during a difficult second half.
Shearer Gives His Verdict on Newcastle’s Start
Speaking to Sky Sports, Newcastle’s all-time leading goalscorer described the opening weeks of the season as solid but warned that inconsistency should be expected because of the squad’s age and significant changes.
He explained that Jaissle is working with a relatively young group following a major turnover, meaning there will inevitably be periods when supporters have to show patience.
Shearer pointed to the defeat at Leeds as a disappointing performance but praised Newcastle’s reaction against Hull. He felt the team’s opening 30 minutes were particularly encouraging, while their determination during the final 20 to 25 minutes demonstrated a level of resilience that had been missing at Elland Road.
The former England striker also stressed that Newcastle’s new signings need time to adapt, particularly those arriving in England for the first time. Jaissle is still learning about his players and determining the best combinations within his squad.
According to Shearer, Newcastle could also benefit from bringing in another one or two players, either during the January transfer window or at the end of the season.
Newcastle Showing Signs of Progress
Saturday’s victory against Hull provided further evidence that Newcastle’s new-look squad may need time to develop. Joe Willock and Lewis Hall found the net during an impressive opening spell, giving supporters a glimpse of the attacking quality within the team.
However, Newcastle were forced to defend their advantage for long periods after the break, making their ability to battle through the difficult spell particularly important.
There is still room for improvement, especially when it comes to controlling matches for longer periods. Nevertheless, Shearer’s comments underline why patience could be important as Jaissle continues to shape the side.
With eight points from their opening five league matches, Newcastle have established a platform to build on. The next challenge will be turning the promising moments seen against Hull into a consistent feature of their performances as the season progresses.
