Tuchel explains Morgan Gibbs-White’s England omission
Thomas Tuchel has given his reasons for leaving Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White out of his latest England squad.
Gibbs-White had been included on the England manager’s preliminary list for the upcoming international break but did not make the final 27-man selection. His omission comes after he was also overlooked for this summer’s World Cup despite ending the previous campaign in impressive form.
The Forest playmaker has been among the Premier League’s most productive English players during the calendar year. Gibbs-White played a major role in helping Forest avoid relegation last season, scoring 14 goals across all competitions from January until the end of the campaign.
He has continued that form into the new season, registering one goal and two assists in his first four Premier League appearances. Despite those numbers, Tuchel has decided against including the 26-year-old, a decision that has frustrated a section of Forest supporters on social media.
Explaining his decision, Tuchel said via the BBC: “It makes no sense to nominate three, four, five, number 10s. It just does not help anyone.
“We can see the form that Morgan is in and he ended the season very, very strongly and was the key player for Forest to not be relegated. We can see him stepping up now.”
Tuchel also used Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer as an example, pointing out that being selected is only the beginning.
“It is one thing to be nominated, by the way, like with Cole (Palmer) and getting your ticket back in the squad. But it’s another thing to perform for England and this also counts,” he added.
“So especially also Cole needs to step up when he comes and needs to show these kind of numbers and these kind of performances to get his place, to keep his shirt and to justify the nomination.”
England are preparing for a three-week break from domestic football, with Nations League matches against Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic on the schedule.
Following the squad announcement, Gibbs-White’s partner, Britney De Villiers, appeared to highlight his recent performances on Instagram.
She shared a post pointing out that Gibbs-White is the only player to have created at least five chances in a single Premier League match this season. The statistic came after he created seven chances during Forest’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa last weekend.
Gibbs-White played a decisive role in that win, providing a clever flick to set up Igor Jesus for the winning goal. His seven chances created also saw him become the first Forest player since their return to the Premier League to create seven or more chances and provide an assist in the same league match.
The attacking midfielder has also been directly involved in a goal in each of his last eight Premier League away appearances.
Only Erling Haaland in September 2023, Robin van Persie in May 2011 and Andrew Cole in December 1993 have produced longer runs, with each of those players recording goal involvements in nine consecutive away league matches.
Before the England squad was officially announced, Forest head coach Oliver Glasner said Gibbs-White had done everything within his control to earn consideration.
“I think he showed maximum effort, commitment and good performances. Then it’s Thomas Tuchel’s decision,” Glasner said.
“Morgan showed good performances, he showed how important he is for us. Everything else is Thomas Tuchel’s decision.”
