Newcastle fans will be furious as Alexander Isak reveals truth behind Liverpool move

Alexander Isak has insisted that he has no regrets about leaving Newcastle United for Liverpool, describing the decision to join the Reds as an “easy” one.

The Sweden international completed a British-record £125million transfer to Liverpool on deadline day last year after a turbulent period at Newcastle.

Isak had previously issued a strong statement claiming that the Magpies had failed to honour certain promises made to him, eventually paving the way for his move to Anfield after Newcastle brought in Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

In his first major sit-down interview of the season with the BBC, the 26-year-old made it clear that he remains convinced he made the right choice.

Speaking about the move, Isak highlighted Liverpool’s size and ambitions, as well as the club’s determination to sign him, as major factors behind his decision.

When asked whether he had any regrets about leaving Newcastle, Isak responded firmly: “No, never. I would never think like that.”

Isak’s start to life at Liverpool was far from straightforward. Having missed Newcastle’s entire pre-season while pushing for his transfer, the striker arrived at Liverpool short of match fitness.

His first Premier League start came towards the end of September against Crystal Palace, while his first league goal for the club did not arrive until November, when he found the net against West Ham.

His campaign was then interrupted by a broken leg suffered while scoring against Tottenham, with Micky van de Ven making a desperate challenge in an attempt to prevent the goal.

The return to Newcastle was particularly hostile, with Isak receiving boos and being branded a “rat” by sections of the home support. He also missed a chance during the 2-2 draw, which was celebrated by the Toon fans.

The forward responded by scoring against Nottingham Forest before producing a brace in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

That performance suggested Isak was beginning to rediscover his best form, although he has since failed to score against Atletico Madrid and Fulham.

Despite the recent setbacks, Isak remains confident that Liverpool can enjoy a successful campaign.

“Everyone knows that success for this club is winning trophies,” he said. “I want to score every game. Everyone is different. Some like to set targets and some don’t. I’m the one that doesn’t.”
