This is embarrassing’ – Everton rocked by astonishing rant over shocking 148-year verdict

Everton may have made an encouraging start to the season, but concerns over the club’s ambition away from the pitch continue to frustrate supporters of the historic Merseyside side.

Since taking control of Everton in 2024, American billionaire Dan Friedkin has reportedly not attended a single match, while there has also been little evidence of the club’s chairman spending time in Liverpool.

The Toffees came close to challenging for European qualification last season before that push eventually faded. Their summer transfer window then caused further frustration among supporters, with several players allowed to leave without being adequately replaced.

Despite those limitations, David Moyes has done an impressive job of keeping Everton competitive. The manager has appeared to be working with significant restrictions while the club’s ownership structure continues to attract scrutiny.

Friedkin’s tenure, however, has not reached the levels of frustration associated with the final years of Farhad Moshiri’s ownership. Nevertheless, Everton’s long wait for major success continues, with the club having gone decades without adding significant silverware to their trophy cabinet.

That ongoing lack of achievement has now prompted a remarkable outburst from talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy.

Jason Cundy launches brutal Everton attack

Cundy, who has regularly criticised Tottenham in recent months, has now turned his attention towards Everton.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s The Sports Bar, Cundy questioned whether Everton even appear to have ambitions beyond simply remaining in the Premier League.

“At least [Tottenham] pretend to try. They don’t even pretend to try – they don’t even try,” Cundy said.

He then delivered an especially harsh assessment of life as an Everton supporter.

“I’m going to say it now – I think Everton are the worst club to support. Worse than Spurs.”

When Jamie O’Hara asked him to explain his reasoning, Cundy continued: “Because they don’t look like or feel like they can do anything or win anything.

“I said to you the other day, they just hang around. They’re like a bad smell. They literally linger in the Premier League.”

Cundy added: “They linger, hanging around doing nothing. Everton do nothing.”

The comments represent an extraordinarily severe criticism of a club with Everton’s history and stature.

The Toffees have been part of the English top flight since the 1954-55 season and have won four league titles, three FA Cups and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

Yet their more recent history has been defined by a lack of major trophies despite having some outstanding players pass through Goodison Park and, more recently, Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Players such as Wayne Rooney, Romelu Lukaku, James Rodriguez, Richarlison, Jordan Pickford and Marouane Fellaini have all represented Everton during the modern era, but the club has been unable to turn the talent at its disposal into major silverware.

Everton have also benefited from significant financial backing from wealthy owners over the years. Supporters therefore continue to question why the club has struggled to challenge consistently for trophies despite its resources and status.

For a club of Everton’s size and history, the frustration among supporters is understandable. Their lengthy wait for major success has become one of the defining stories of the modern era.

Cundy’s comments may be extremely harsh, but they have reignited the debate surrounding Everton’s ambition, ownership and failure to compete for major honours over the past few decades.
